REDEFINITION OF THE MODEL OF URBAN MOBILITY IN THE METROPOLITAN AREA OF BARCELONA. IDENTIFICATION OF SPACES OF RECOVERY OF PUBLIC SPACE

At present, most of the streets of the cities of the metropolis of Barcelona are destined to the through-traffic and, specifically, to the motorized mobility. Habitability in public space is scarce due to the impacts derived from mobility and its infrastructures: noise, air pollution, accidents, urban heat island, among others.

To free public space for other uses and to control the variables of the environment to improve habitability in the public space, it is necessary to modify the mobility model. Among other aspects, accessibility to the city and its services must be promoted, fostering also the democratization of mobility based on the increase in the efficiency of more economical modes of transport and within reach of all age groups, promoting mobility on foot, restricting the occupation of public space by cars, promoting shared car and more sustainable, more energy-efficient, less noisy and polluting and more secure displacements.

The document is structured in four parts that have as the objective the definition of a new metropolitan local basic network that integrates all the surface transport networks, maximizes the liberation of public space through the pacification of streets, the increase of the staying spaces and the promotion of new citizen uses in the public space.
