The Ecological Urbanism book

This book is one part of one venture that thousands of scientists, technicians, politicians, and citizens in general, have tried to build in order to redirect the future of our cities toward less uncertain scenarios. It is a piece of a project intend to increase our ability to advance, focusing on the main challenges of the future and many more conditions. Conditions such as influence, urban sustainability proposing a new conceptual, methodological and instrumental framework for the construction of more sustainable urban models. While also aiming to articulate a new strategy to compete based on the information that takes into account the same time, a new model of city of knowledge. Both urban models are needed, and in fact the one without the other have no future, as he argues in the first chapter. With the other gives rise to the so-called smart cities (Smart Cities) that combine the development of more sustainable cities in the same urban model in the information age.
As I said, the book is one more piece that aims to increase our ability to advance which includes the design of a new model of urban planning. I have described the project that has been maturing these past years as an ecological venture. The extent that it was the intentional reference urban model and the way to parametrizarlo, with a new system of indicators (restraints). Ecological urbanism is urbanism, in my opinion this include smart cities.
Urban planning drives a new urban model of reference, which is none other than the Mediterranean, compact and complex, city adapted to address the challenges of sustainability in the information age.
Indicators provide the Protocol of measurement that we evaluated the degree of coincidence of the analyzed urban fabric (fabric consolidated or newly created), to the urban model of reference.
The theoretical background consisting of ecological urbanism, is a more sustainable urban model and the system of assessment (of indicators), which are emerging as the basis for a new certificate of urbanism with sustainability criteria. In fact, it is about to see the light of a publication that will launch the Ministry of development, work in this area has founded the Agency of Urban Ecology of Barcelona.
Barcelona City Council, for its part, is pushing the creation of a certificate of urban planning for Smart Cities. A certification Protocol named City Protocol by Vicente Guallart, chief architects of the City Council of Barcelona and it is intended to be universal. It is expected that the Protocol will be adopted by cities across the world, prior discussion of the same Urban Ecology Agency of the Protocol shall be the basic document. The end result will be longer. The process, in itself, already worth rewarding.
City Protocol will additionally boost the economy of urban innovation by encouraging the definition of standards and the development of technologies and urban solutions that promote efficiency in the use of resources, environmental sustainability, and social and economic progress of the cities.
In the project of ecobarrio of Figueres, the book contains a set of innovative proposals, some of them are instrumental. The project has been elaborated by an extensive team that has been flailing each of their parts in a feedback process with criteria and values for each of the indicators. The result is a comprehensive, coherent project between their parties and does not leave out any fundamental aspect for the formation of a neighborhood that we qualify as ecological.
The book includes the evaluation or audit of the project with the Protocol of the Ecological Urbanism. As expected, the result of the evaluation is excellent.
The assessment is in itself yet another innovative aspect as it is the proposal of a new mill that must provide 100% of the air conditioning and hot water with solar energy.
The proposals included in the project are very interesting and innovative that they will not be made a reality without a management and governance meeting the objectives of the project. The chapter devoted to the organization also is new and seeks new formulas for the achievement of the objectives of ecological urbanism; to change the styles of life according to the current challenges, and to ensure the economic income in each of the phases of the project: planning, construction, and use.

This publication summarizes the work carried out for the drafting of the Plan of the Figueres Llevant Sector within the framework of the project CAT-MED (Change Mediterranan Metropolises Around Time).
The project is to promote a study for the urban planning and later construction of a pilot barrio in Figueres, conceived according to sustainability criteria, that will also generate a methodology that serve as reference to other similar operations.
